Gardening As A Hobby

Submitted by: Joe Castro

Gardening is a year-round hobby, which requires specific tasks at certain times of the year – often planning for several months ahead. In order to be ready to plant in your garden during next spring, you need to start preparing the soil sometime in the fall.

To prepare your garden for planting next spring, one of the most important things is to spread and till compost or peat moss over your garden, especially if it is a new garden. Adding fertilizers and nutrients several months ahead of the actual planting will help to ensure healthier plants.

Apart from preparing the soil, the winter months can also be used for removing of leaves and other debris and disposing of any dead plants. Some gardening experts recommend creating a calendar of planting dates so when spring is here you will know when to plant each variety.

Once spring arrives, your planting timetable will depend on where you live, your soil type and your local climate. Even though spring officially begins around March 20 th , you may have several more weeks of winter weather. Plants and vegetables that thrive in warm weather should not be planted until after the date that you can realistically expect no further frost. After that date, you can also safely remove any protective winter covers from plants.

Many varieties of annual flower seeds and vegetable seeds should be planted in March or April for best results. Try to sow seeds on a warm dry day as the soil may still be damp during this time of the year, thus causing the seeds to rot.

One tip for spring planting is to plant different varieties of crops and flowers in different parts of the garden than they were previously planted. Crop rotation helps to improve the health of the soil as well as preventing soil disease from spreading.

And before you even start planting, early spring is also a good time of year to perform basic outdoor maintenance tasks such as repairing fences or trellises, sharpening and cleaning tools. Spring is also the time to cut back unruly growth on most shrubs, before leaves begin to grow again.

It’s hard to understand why some information is written in a way that just makes it impossible to decipher. Scrap is so important to so many people that getting the right information, the first time, makes all the difference in making a timely decision. And who has time to wait these days?

Buy Airsoft guns and engage in great mock warfare

These are tough times. And many of us are feeling it in our wallets. But .. No matter how tough times are, we can’t forget the basics. And scrap definitely is one of the basics. And, without the basics taken care of, how can you get started?
Below is one of the best articles we have ever read on the subject. It lays everything out nicely, it’s easy to read, and, understand, it touches on all of the key issues, and, best of all, when you have finished reading it, you will definitely know which is a very good direction to take given your circumstances.

Life like simulation is what makes Airsoft such a special hobby. These days most people are glued to their computers or TVs ? either browsing through Facebook or watching inane programs on the idiot box. And of course, this leads to laziness and obesity and all those things that are undesirable. Simulated combating using Airsoft guns is a much better hobby ? it has a physical element to it and it also is completely engaging.

Airsoft started off as a hobby in Japan and this was in the 80s. As detailed as the Japanese are they went to great pains to create real life looking replica guns for this hobby. Gradually the popularity of this hobby spread to the other countries in Asia and Europe and North America among others. Now it is one of the most enjoyed hobbies in the world. And thanks to world class Airsoft guns one does get the feel that they are in an actual battlefield combating actual enemies. And after all the action throughout the day people from opposing camps gets together over refreshments and discuss the events of the day. This creates great camaraderie among them.

Humans have always been social animals and this habit, aided by technology, gave rise to the concept of social networking. But think about it ? the more addicted people are to social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter the more unsocial they become. Today you don?t see people making eye contact as they converse. They are either looking at the screens of their PCs or their smartphones. Smartphones have been devilish really ? they have taken off whatever free time people had when they were outdoors. But thanks to some people staying engaged through these simulation combat games the social nature of humans is still intact. In fact more people are now finding Airsoft an increasingly popular hobby.

Safety is always a concern when someone uses Airsoft guns. And since a lot many kids play these games their parents are always concerned. However, when the correct protective gear is used there is no harm in these mock combats. Of course, someone tries to be smarter than required and have their eyes damaged. This is what needs to be avoided.

Go back to becoming social with Airsoft. With life like Airsoft guns to buy you will have a great time on the field for sure. Airsoft is one of the most engaging hobbies of all. And with such great quality Airsoft guns available for you to buy you would always be in love with these mock combat games.

Why You Should Take Up A Physical Hobby

Submitted by: Nati Roberts

The working day is getting gradually longer and more of us are forced to work a greater number of days in the week In fact, it is not uncommon to finish work late and then continue work at home. You should try to avoid this situation if possible. Draw a line between your working life and your home life and only work late or from home when it is absolutely necessary.

The stress of longer days and longer weeks means that people not only have less time to unwind but that we also suffer from stress, depression and other illnesses more often. Taking up a physical hobby or pastime is a great way to combat illness and wind down after or prepare for work. Make a little time in your schedule on a regular basis to do some exercise.

It is recommended that you exercise every day or two and if possible you should stick to this. A daily routine is the easiest to adopt, although it isn?t always feasible to spend a certain amount of time every single day exercising. However, even half an hour a day can really benefit your physical and your mental health.

Exercise helps to burn off energy as well as fat and by doing so, it can help prevent heart disease and create chemicals in our bodies that are absolutely vital to a healthy life. Similarly, it can reduce stress and depression so will benefit more than your physical well-being.

Walking and jogging are among two of the easiest, most affordable exercise regimens you could try. Apart from some very basic equipment for jogging, and even less for walking, you won?t have to pay a penny. Try and walk or run for half an hour every day and if you don?t find you have the time then try walking to or from work or get off the bus a stop earlier than normal. Even most gym memberships can be found for a cost no more than what one would pay for a coffee every morning. Overall a daily work out is a great way to improve health and lower stress from day to day.

Submitted by: Sarah Veda

When it comes to booking your hotel stay in Amsterdam, take the time necessary to select the right amenities and to look at where the hotel is located. But, do not take too much time looking at these features or you may find your hotel choices rather limited. As tourism is one of the strong suits in the city, you will find many hotels that could be the perfect choice for you. Yet, waiting until the last minute can cause you to miss out on the best choices and the most affordable choices in these hotels. In other words, look but make a decision.

To help you to get the booking process done correctly, there are several key things that you will want to take into consideration when it comes to your hotel choice. First, consider the location. Is it near to the things that you need? Second, determine if the hotel offers the necessary and desirable amenities that you are looking for? Third, determine the cost. This can be a bit tricky though. Many times you will not learn the cost of the stay at the hotel until you get through the booking process. Yet, to avoid this, try looking for the right hotel on the web instead.

It is advisable to try and book your Amsterdam hotel as soon as you know that you will be traveling. If you wait too long, you may find yourself without the room or the choice locations to choose from. Nevertheless, it does pay off to do a bit of shopping around to learn about the right location with the most affordable choice. All in all, your trip to Amsterdam can be an amazing one but only if your choice of hotels is just that. Take the time to book ahead of time and save money and time.

Cheap Scrap Booking Ideas

Submitted by: Keysha Jecks

Are you wanting to scrapbook some of those precious memories of your family but money is tight? I know how you feel, money seems to be tight for everyone and we are no different. However I have come up with some pretty unique and cute ideas for making scrap booking a little cheaper.

What are all these fabulous ideas? Well they are scrap booking ideas that I got just going about my day and they use products in the house that almost everyone has.

My first ideas is recycle, recycle, recycle. Things that you think may be garbage make beautiful decorations on scrapbook pages. For instance, that foil that was cut too short isn?t garbage, you can use it to frame pictures or cut in shapes to use on the page. However there is one rule to this, do not use anything that has had meat or bodily fluids touching it.

Or how about those candy wrappers. Well wash them if needed and some can make really excellent d?cor. Take for instance Snickers, you can take a few pictures of your child or children laughing and then use these wrappers to accent the page. Or WhatChamacallit can be used for baby?s first pictures.

You can use any type of wrapper. I get Parent?s Choice diapers and one of my kids favorite scrapbook page is where I cut the ?Parent?s Choice? out and pasted that to the top of the page with the rest of the page covered in my kids.

The key to making this successful is to get creative, think outside the box. Just because someone else says it?s garbage doesn?t mean you can?t use it. Rags that have seen there last days make nice decorations. Or the fabric scraps left from making a dress make nice frames for pictures.

How about using string, or plastic bags, tissue boxes. In fact boxes are sometimes the best thing to use. Most items that are boxed are really decorative and make nice frames or accents for scrap booking. Just get creative and keep things that look nice. Whenever we finish a box of tissues I fold it up and put it in my scrap booking drawer for later.

Christmas is coming up and there is no better time to really stockpile great and cheap scrap booking items. All that wrapping that you bought and have used, there is no reason to let it just go to waste. The stuff that wasn?t torn to itty-bitty pieces can be fold and stashed away for later. Or even all those Christmas cards; use the pictures on them for accents, and the envelopes to frame pictures.

Even the decorations you might just throw away, like tinsel, fake snow, or the Christmas tree can be used. Now the whole tree can?t be used, but you can pluck some of the needles or cut off some of the bark.

The most important thing to remember is that scrap booking ideas can be found everywhere, and in everything. Before you throw anything away think ?can I use this to scrapbook? or ?how would this look on a scrap booking page.?

Photographs are frequently taken outdoors here are 7 strategies for making your outside pictures look wonderful.

1. Watch out for shadows. Be familiar with individuals shadows, especially in your subjects faces. It’s worth taking an additional look before shooting to look at this. Shadows about the eyes is quite unflattering. Lots of shadows through the photo makes it hard to pay attention to the topic.

2. Use Colour. Colour is generally by the bucket load outdoors so utilize it to best advantage. Think about taking snapshots of your kids in, around, or behind an outdoor of vibrant coloured flowers. You might visit the opposite finish from the spectrum making natural brown colouring an element.

3. Make use of the expensive. Even when you’re outdoors in reasonably vibrant light getting a complete expensive may also be effective. You can use it to embellish the topics face particularly when there’s a vibrant background. This can take out shadows within the faces.

Maybe request some of the individuals to jump up right before you shoot. Get everybody laughing suddenly. Throw a seaside ball in to the midst. Whatever your imagination pops up with may even work here. This frequently produces probably the most fun, memory photos as opposed to a still portrait with individuals searching abnormal.

6. Focus attention about them. While you frame your shot, carefully consider the background foreground. Make certain your subject may be the focal attention. Re-frame the shot, focus or out, concentrate on the subject (not the backdrop) or slowly move the location to really make it work.

7. Select a background. Outdoors offers an endless variety of skills. Search for something unusual for any creative effect. Keep in mind that another background does not need to mean using the attention from the subject. Think about such things as fencing, colourful flowers, sky, water etc.

Benefit from the time spent together outside while you practice and excellent your photography abilities.

Can Your Hobby Become Your Job?

Can Your Hobby Become Your Job?

Submitted by: Scott Phelps

Some people may come into working at home accidentally, because a hobby grew into something more, and still others may have to make a deliberate effort to achieve that. What kind of hobby may lend itself to becoming your employment, and how might this happen?

The truth is that a good number of hobbies could be used to create income, and anything that leads to an end product would be a good candidate. If you like knitting or crochet, you can make blankets and clothing for sale, and could consider custom orders rather than just making what you think will sell. Sewing too produces similar end products, and these hobbies seem to be well suited to the baby and children’s clothing markets.

Talented artists or photographers could produce portraits, and as your confidence increases you may consider expanding into wedding photography, or other important, one off events. If you have an affinity for the computer then becoming an expert with a program such as Photoshop can open the way for you to selling photo collages, or creating custom invitations or stationary for people. Scrapbooking too can be done on the computer or using paper, die casts and other materials.

Computer enthusiasts may consider learning a specific skill, and use that to help others. You may have a talent for fixing computers, or may be good at building websites and both these and other skills are marketable. There are many people who need help with computer maintenance, troubleshooting and upgrades and if you have the ability to do that then you can sell your skills in the local area.

If you do not have a hobby that leads to an end product, then an area you might want to consider would be tutoring. Anything that you are good at you may be able to teach to another person. All you need is to have the skill and enthusiasm yourself, along with the patience to teach another person. That person may not pick up your beloved hobby as fast as you may like, but maintaining patience with them is essential if you wish to retain them as a client.

How does a hobby become your job? When you are particularly fond of a hobby you may just participate too much to provide for your own needs. By selling the excess things that you make you not only recover the money spent on materials but you can earn some for the efforts that you put into it. This may increase over time to the point that you consider doing it as your primary source of income, and if it didn’t happen by itself this is a course that you can choose to follow.

The only real thing that could hold you back from doing this is if you are really not very good at whatever it is that you like to do, as a good level of skill is needed to make your goods or services worth selling. Even then, if you are willing to put in the time to learn and get better, there is the chance that you could turn your hobby into a business.

Vintage Lace

Submitted by: Sam Scribbler

Lace is a fascinating fabric, beautiful, intricate, delicate yet deceptively strong and sexy too. When I’m out hunting for vintage I am always delighted to find an interesting piece of vintage lace or a vintage lace garment.

When I was young, I enjoyed some of my summer holidays in the country, where I stayed with a fat auntie who suffered from narcolepsy. She could fall asleep without warning during almost any activity including walking. On several occasions I entered her kitchen to find her asleep at the sink with her hand deep in a washing-up bowl. She often fell asleep while riding her bicycle. It was only due to quiet country roads and a few miracle escapes that she lived to be eighty-four.

My aunty was a collector of all things vintage. She hoarded anything old and although she had very little knowledge of what she was buying, her intuition was sound – she had a good eye. Her house was a vintage treasure trove, a messy jumble of Victoriana and early twentieth century bric-a-brac. She hardly ever left the house without returning with a newly acquired object and they weren’t always small. In her garden stood a small private chapel that she used for the storage of large pieces of mostly dark brown furniture in need of restoration and a couple of pianos. Nothing that entered the chapel ever came out again.

A lace cushion she kept on the wide window seat in her parlour always fascinated me. She had bought it from a widower in her village, whose wife had inherited it from her grandmother. The last piece of lace the grandmother was working on before she died was still attached, as were all of the little bobbins and their threads. My aunt said it was Belgian and that the grandmother had been Scandinavian. The cushion was soft satin and the piece of lace attached was extremely fine. I wondered if the grandmother had glasses, or if she worked with a magnifying glass? Although I was told never to touch the cushion I regularly altered the position of many of the bobbins, knowing that it would never be noticed.

Maybe it was because of my fat aunty and the lace cushion that I have always been attracted to vintage lace. According to Wikipedia fine lace has been manufactured since the late fifteenth or early sixteenth century. Unfortunately I have had to content myself with viewing museum examples of these very early pieces and representations by artists, like Van Dyke.

Over the years, however, I have bought and sold several manufacturers’ sample collections of vintage lace. I was recently very pleased to be able to purchase a large scrapbook of vintage novelty lace in many colourways and wide variety of designs – I do hope my scanner can do them justice.

This collection of vintage lace includes many large document swatches perfect for conversion, reference, trending or inspiration on mood-boards. Lace is definitely on-trend this year and will probably be much bigger in summer 2011. It looks as though almost any apparel manufactured for women this summer could be made with lace, have a lace trim or lace panel: blouses, skirts, dresses, t-shirts and even overcoats and bags will be appearing on the high street in lace. Vintage lace will be the inspiration for many of these products.

I didn’t inherit my auntie’s lace cushion. She left it to a female cousin who sold it.
